Renaissance Learning UK Ltd., incorporating AlphaSmart, (RLUK) regrets to announce that its Dana range of products, including Dana Wireless, has been discontinued within the European Union due to a change in EU regulations concerning the use of certain materials within the manufacturing process. This change came into effect on the 1st of July 2006 and prevented RLUK as the manufacturer from importing any new stock into the EU from that date, but did not restrict sales of existing stock. Also, as far as RLUK understands it, the legislation does not restrict private individuals buying non-compliant products abroad and then importing them personally. (US versions of Dana are still available in the United States, and will continue to be, as equivalent legislation has not been introduced.)
The new legislation is driven by a desire to cut down on the recycling of certain types of material used in the manufacture of electrical and electronic products, and is in no way a reflection of the safety of use of the finished product. For RLUK as manufacturer, the re-engineering costs to make Dana compliant were not economically acceptable, and so regretfully, the company has been forced to discontinue the product in the EU. However, RLUK will continue to support the Dana range for the foreseeable future, both in terms of additional software and peripherals, as well as warranty and other repairs.
Are you affected by this?
RLUK is aware that many individuals and educational institutions have been affected by the introduction of this legislation and its effect on products such as the Dana range, particularly where they are used for Special Educational Needs.
If you feel that there should be some form of dispensation because the benefits provided by the Dana range outweigh the recycling gains, we suggest you might like to consider contacting your local MEP to discuss the issue.
