Product History

Our first product, AlphaSmart®, was introduced in August 1993. It was Macintosh compatible and had 16 pages of memory (32,000 bytes).

In February 1995 we introduced the AlphaSmart Pro which was compatible with both Macs and PCs, and had 64 pages of memory (128,000 Bytes).

In October 1997, we introduced the third generation of the AlphaSmart family, the AlphaSmart 2000. Along with a more ergonomic design, we added spell-checking, direct printing, auto-off and a keyboarding timer.

In October 1998, we introduced our 100% error-free infrared technology for the AlphaSmart 2000, allowing users to transfer text to a computer or printer without connecting any cables.

The AlphaSmart 2000 has been localized for the European and South/Central American Markets namely France, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Brazil and all other Spanish speaking countries.

In January 2000, we introduced the AlphaSmart 3000. The AlphaSmart 3000's all-new SmartApplet™ architecture is capable of extending its simple functionality with the introduction of SmartApplets. SmartApplets are mini software applications that extend the AlphaSmart's functionality for keyboarding, templates, email and much more. Additionally, we increased the battery life and memory, added cut/copy/paste, a USB port, and a serial port.

Between April 2000 and March 2002, we shipped several SmartApplets, the AlphaHub, the AlphaSmart Manager, and localized versions of the AlphaSmart 3000 for i.e. UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and France.

In June 2002, we introduced Dana by AlphaSmart, the first Palm Powered laptop alternative, and shipped it in October. Following in the footsteps of the AlphaSmart 3000, Dana continues the traditions of ultra-light portability, long battery life, and fundamental simplicity, combining the convenience and affordability of a handheld device with the benefits of a lightweight notebook computer. Dana's expandability, communications options, and thousands of applications suit it to a wide range of uses.

Following a June 2003 announcement, Dana Wireless extended the Dana product line in September 2003 by adding built-in 802.11b Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing access to networked applications from the student's desk, and opening a new range of possibilities for real-time interactive learning. During the first half of 2004, localized versions of Dana Wireless were made available for the UK, and for German and Spanish languages.

Neo by AlphaSmart, based on updated SmartApplet architecture, joined the product line in August 2004 after its introduction at NECC in June. Neo expands on the capabilities of the AlphaSmart 3000 with a 50% larger screen capable of displaying twice as much text using the new font display capabilities of AlphaWord Plus, Neo's built-in word processor. It also features twice the storage capacity for both applications and user data, along with built-in IrDA (wireless infrared) transfer support and direct printing to selected USB printers.

Along with Neo, AlphaSmart introduced the next generation AlphaSmart Manager 2 application that makes it possible to load, retrieve, and print files and manage configurations for up to 30 Neo devices at once. Two new SmartApplets, Beamer and AlphaWord Plus, were also introduced. AlphaWord Plus is the new standard word processor for Neo, and Beamer enables peer-to-peer file exchange between Neos, or between Neo and Dana or other Palm OS device.
