AlphaSmart Dana Wireless
by Giles Turnbull
For anyone who wants to be able to write anywhere, the AlphaSmart Dana Wireless is an excellent tool for knocking out large quantities of text at a moment's notice
AlphaSmart's Dana Wireless is a Palm OS-powered device with a built-in keyboard designed for writers. To really appreciate why and how it has been built the way it has, you need to look at AlphaSmart's earlier writing tool, the AlphaSmart 3000.
While the Dana may not be ideal for PDA tasks, it is excellent for writing with. The keyboard is superb, offering just the right amount of key travel and satisfying feel without being overly noisy. It's a proper full-sized keyboard, about the same width as an iBook's. There are plenty of modifier keys that allow you to use the basic Palm functions (New, Done, OK, Cancel and so on) without lifting your fingers. As with any other monochrome Palm device, the battery life is impressive, and the built-in rechargeable battery pack can be replaced with standard AA cells if necessary.
For anyone who wants to be able to write anywhere, the AlphaSmart Dana Wireless is an excellent tool for knocking out large quantities of text at a moment's notice. Its simplicity is a nice change for people who spend valuable writing time devoting tender loving care to their delicate laptops.
